12 The wolf pack

That night we tidied up my injuries and I sewed up a slash I had on the left forearm. Most of the blood, it seems, was the wolf. I had dealt it some fierce injuries.
"Help me with the wolf, we have food tonight and skin to clean."
I looked at Xin who was still wide eyed and panicked.
"They won't cause us any harm now, but don't be surprised if they come down to see what we're doing." I'd already grabbed the wolf and was cleaning up the pelt. I heard a snuffling and called to the alpha female that I was here and I was now the dominant.
Xin broke out of her trance and followed my lead. She helped me skin the carcass and then butcher some of the meat for later.
The smell of the kill drew the pack closer. I growled and told them to respect the distance. They did and lay down, watching my every move.
"Xin, cook the meat so its just seared but bloody on the inside. Cut it into strips. We'll need about twenty or so. Don't worry about our friends, they will learn to be contented around us." and with that I tended the fire, collected my scattered belongings and allowed the wolves to become aquainted with my smell.
The alpha female quietly approached, slinking low to the floor, ears down, tail between her legs. I stood in front of her and she lay flat on the floor in submission.
"Pass me a piece of meat, Xin." I didn't take my eyes off the wolf but held out my right hand, waiting for Xin to pass it to me.
"Here," she said, " just seared as you said."
Taking it, I handed it to the wolf at my feet. Cautiously, she took it and retreated about four metres. Having eaten it she made mewing noises and three cubs came forward. It was important I accept them so I did just that and covered them in my scent and feed them small pieces of meat. Having completed the task I let them return to their mother. She stood and staying low she backed away.
" Start giving me the strips Xin, we begin adopting the pack tonight."
